Ecuador Sightseeing and Tours from Hacienda Cusin, Otavalo
Ecuador sightseeing, excursions and overnight stays
Visit Colonial Quito from Hacienda Cusin
The gold-filled, Baroque La Compañía church, the Casa del Alabado museum of Pre-Incan artefacts, and the Quito School paintings and sculptures dotted across the Old Town’s myriad religious buildings are among the must-sees of Ecuador’s UNESCO World Heritage capital city, just an hour and twenty minutes by car from Hacienda Cusin.
The Quitsato Project on the Equator
Located at true Latitude 0, Quitsato is a multilayered cultural project which aims to protect and boost pride in indigenous cultural heritage. It includes a giant metallic tube in the middle of 200-foot sun dial, and also hosts cultural events and ancestral ceremonies. For more information, visit: www.quitsato.org
Páramo del Ángel
The Jurassic Park landscapes of the windswept Páramo del Ángel, with their emerald lakes and surreal, eight-foot high frailejones plants, lie to the northeast. Explore this unique ecosystem at 12,000 feet by foot or horseback, before returning to Cusin.
1 day minimum (though at least 2 with an overnight stay is preferable – see our Imbabura Itineraries for more information). Cusin transfer to Andean Train. Ibarra-Salinas, Chota desert. Cusin transfer to the Paramo. Picnic lunch. Return to Cusin.
Minimum group 3. 1-2 guests, additional. Reserve in advance.
For more time to explore and enjoy the páramo, including one or two nights at another historic hacienda, see our Páramo El Ángel Discovery itinerary.
Mega-diverse Cloud Forests
Ecuador’s mega-diverse cloud forest ecosystem, home to 15-17% of the planet’s plant species and almost 20% of its birds, is a haven for those who love the natural treasures our planet. Exlplore the forests and tremendous rivers – and all the creatures who live among them – with a stay at El Refugio Intag Cloud Forest Lodge, a rustic reserve surrounded by wildlife, or Mashpi Lodge, an ultra-modern luxury hotel with its own research station and in-house scientists.
For more information, visit www.elrefugiocloudforest.com and www.mashpilodge.com, or view our El Refugio de Intag Cloud Forest Exploration itinerary.
Travel to the Galapagos Islands
Charles Darwin may be the poster boy for the archipelago 605 miles off Ecuador’s Pacific Coast, but there is much more to these enchanting islands than the Theory of Evolution. Here, come within feet of exotic and endemic species like the inky-black marine iguana and Galapagos shark, delight in diverse and surreal landscapes, and discover a mysterious and scandalous human history of pirates, pioneers and prison colonies.
Guests can connect directly on good highways with Quito’s airport from Cusin,
either before or after their Galapagos journey.
Visit the Amazon Rainforest from Hacienda Cusin
The largest and most evocative of Ecuador’s regions, the Amazon rainforest is home to an eye-watering multitude of tree, plant and animal species and seven indigenous tribes. Following in the footsteps of the great Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana canoe down the wide Napo River passing 600-year-old ceiba trees, river dolphins, and, when darkness falls, the glowing red eyes of caimans.
The Amazon is reachable both by road and by air from Cusin.
