Following the newly-weds’ vows, indigenous dancers accompany the procession over a bridge into El Monasterio, where groups of up to 200 family and friends celebrate with an elegant dinner and dancing. Ecuador weddings at the hacienda are a festival of life with colour radiating from the orchids festooning the trees, the rose petals carpeting the paths, the wonderful murals and antique, and the fireworks display marking the end of the night.

The Wedding Ceremony

“The bride makes her entrance on a red carpet, through a 17th-century garden patio, she proceeds on a rose-petal path to her wedding ceremony. Family, friends and her groom await in Cusin’s main garden, under the shadows of an ancient cedro tree festooned with orchids and ferns. After the ceremony, a wedding-party procession, with local folkloric musicians, continues to a reception in El Monasterio. The wedding ball ends with a spectacular fireworks display.”

Ecuador Wedding Guidelines

• This important event is best served by an initial meeting, preferably at Hacienda Cusin, or by arrangement in New York City.
• After a decision has been made it is essential to block guest room spaces for at least one night and secure the wedding date with a one-night security deposit.
• A deposit of $1,000 is non-refundable.
• Wedding guests usually make their own travel arrangements. We recommend that all guests stay the night and driving is not encouraged.
• Due to the delicacy of the gardens and the age of buildings tents cannot be erected on the lawns of the hacienda.
• Weddings of all denominations are welcome.
• US law does not recognise weddings in Ecuador. We recommend a civil ceremony beforehand.

We hiked the upper... read moreWe enjoyed our stay at Hacienda Cusin taking advantage of the nice hiking and horseback riding. Beautiful country to explore. We hiked the upper trail which was an easy loop of about 6 miles overlooking farms and the valley. We searched for the waterfall but were a bit early in the season. Our ride was on the opposite side of the ridge and was a treat. Good horses and you can ask to gallop. The Otavalo mkt is a short taxi ride and ok but I hear the handicraft markets up the road provide a finer selection. It was fun to stroll into San Pablo to visit the bakery. ( although not much else  to do there. ) Staff was incredibly accommodating. In regards to rooms, the garden cabins are nice for privacy and a fire, but we preferred the main house. Transportation to and from Quito was easy. Staff was very communicative before and during our stay. A great way to get off the total tourist route and enjoy a sweet setting. read less

Its history... read moreThe hacienda, located about 10 kilometers from Otavalo, is one of the most extraordinary lodgings my husband and I have ever experienced. Its history dates back to 1602, when the Spanish sold an enormous spread of property in Ecuador to Castilian aristocrats whose daughter was marrying nobility in the New World. What happened after that fills 4 single-spaced pages of the hotel’s written history. By 1990, however, the property had fallen into grievous disrepair. Happily a former teacher from Manhattan who had traveled in South America for decades, collecting exquisite textile pieces as he went, was persuaded to buy the place. Since then, Nicholas Millhouse has transformed the main house, which recalls the glory of an 18th century manor, and expanded it by creating a fantasy “monastery” studded with both centuries-old art and wild expressions of wit and creativity.
 
 We had the good fortune to spend a night at the hacienda when Millhouse was in residence. A gracious host and captivating raconteur, he was generous in sharing insights into his achievement, which includes assembling a team that is unfailingly warm and generous. Together they have made the extensive gardens a paradise. We stayed in the Duenita suite, equipped with a huge and wonderful bed. The wi-fi and shower water temperature were a bit sketchy, but the hacienda offers a lot of alternative entertainment: horseback riding, resident llamas, a well-stocked library, movies, and games. Meals in the romantic dining room were top-notch too. If you’re anywhere near it, my advise is: don’t miss this place. And don’t make our mistake. Stay longer than just one night. read less

Room 25 is like a little... read moreJust spent a fabulous 2 days/nights at Hacienda Cusin to be a part of the New Year celebrations. Room 25 is like a little oasis, set apart from the other rooms and with its own "private" garden and roof top. Too much to list in the 'highlights' category but have to mention the excellent staff, the beautiful gardens, log fire in the room every evening, hot water bottles, the seclusion, history of the hacienda, did I mention the excellent staff. 
 
 We benefitted from having the owner in residence for the New Year celebrations so got to hear first-hand the history behind the building of the hotel to what it has become today. 
 
 Can't say enough about the New Year's evening - great ambience with display of local dancing, great meal, fireworks, dancing, and the tradition of burning effigies and bad experiences to move into the new year.
 
 This is a must-see on any tour of Ecuador, set your expectations appropriately, it is not a 5* US style hotel, it is in fact so much more than that. Super convenient for visiting Otavalo and the famous market among a number of other excursions and attractions.
